Email your MP to protect jobs in Southport and stop the GRO and passport office relocation

PCS Southport Branch are launching an urgent campaign to stop the relocation of General Register Office and passport office work away from Smedley Hydro, a move that puts the future of one of Southport’s largest and most vital employers at serious risk.

When major workplaces leave a community, the impact is swift and severe, jobs vanish, local businesses decline, and entire areas suffer long‑term, often terminal, damage. Southport cannot become the next example.

Smedley Hydro doesn’t just employ staff it supports the wider community, shops, cafés, transport links and local services. For many workers, relocating out of Southport simply isn’t possible. Relocation means higher costs, longer commutes and life changing disruption.

A local PCS member survey delivered a stark message: 89% want the work to remain in Southport. Many rely heavily on nearby family for childcare and transport, and any increase in travel time or cost would be devastating.

We urgently need members to speak up and keep this issue at the top of the agenda. The future of this workforce and a cornerstone employer in Southport hangs in the balance. Our community, our jobs, and our stability are at risk unless we act now.

We need every member, supporter, and ally to help keep this issue front and centre.
